AFJROTC cadets receive their first official rank

By Savannah Wilbers

Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) is a program with the mission of developing citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.  This is accomplished through a military structure where the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment are taught to high school students.

The entire TRIAD AFJROTC is comprised of 137 cadets from La Monte, Warrensburg and Knob Noster High Schools.  The Third period class, which is called Charlie Flight, is made up of fifteen first year cadets and 4 fourth year (Senior) cadets. Tuesday, October 9, was the day the cadets received their first official rank, Cadet Airman.  This semester, Cadet Senior Airman Butler is the Flight Sergeant and Cadet Airman First Class Hogan and they are the selected leaders of Charlie Flight.

Every Wednesday, the Cadets wear their uniforms, which closely mirror those worn in the Air Force except for patches on their sleeves which show they are in AFJROTC.  To ensure the cadets are following established standards they are inspected in their uniforms weekly. The expectation of the inspection include: uniforms are cleaned and pressed, all badges and ranks are properly worn and shoes are polished.   Ladies are only allowed to wear one stud earring per ear. If they wear makeup, it has to be conservative. Long hair must be pulled up in a bun, not touching the back of their neck. Men’s hair cannot touch their ears and cannot touch the back of their collar.

Cadets learn about Aviation History, participate in Country Studies, plan and run projects such as community service events and the upcoming Veterans Day ceremonies.    On October 18, they got to go to watch Hawgsmoke where A-10 fighter planes from Whiteman AFB and other installations, demonstrated their capabilities during a live fire exercise.  The cadets were excited because they got to see the A-10’s “blow things up”
